WKU's Public Radio Wins Top Award for Transpark
Coverage
Bowling Green, Ky. - The Public Radio Service of Western
Kentucky University has earned top honors from the Associated
Press for coverage of the controversial Kentucky Tri-modal Transpark
issue.
WKYU-FM received the first place award for "Best Continuing
Coverage" in the state of Kentucky for stories relating
to economic and environmental issues associated with the Transpark
development. The coverage included numerous interview segments
and culminated with a report heard nationally on National Public
Radio's "All Things Considered." The reports were produced
and anchored by News Director Dan Modlin.
In addition, Western's Public Radio has earned top honors
for Investigative/ Enterprise reporting for a story titled "Solidarity."
That report dealt with the unanimous voting records of members
of the Bowling Green City Commission in the year 2000. "Solidarity"
was researched and anchored by Assistant News Director Jeanine
Howard Cherry.
Western's Public Radio also earned a first-place award for
Public Service Reporting for a series of reports relating to
credit card use among college students. That report, which aired
last fall, was produced and anchored by Modlin. WKYU-FM also
received a "Statewide Cooperation" award from the Associated
Press for sharing stories with other news outlets in the Commonwealth.
The station's news staff includes Modlin, Cherry and News
Producer/Anchor Kevin Willis. The staff was also recognized by
the Associated Press for outstanding coverage on Sept. 11 and
the days that followed the terror attacks on New York and Washington.
Modlin said the award for coverage of the Transpark issue
is especially meaningful to the entire staff.
"This has been a very difficult story to cover, because
emotions have run very high on all sides of the issue in the
community," he said. "The fact that the Associated
Press judges considered our entry to be the best in the state
confirms our belief that we have provided fair, informative coverage."
Western's Public Radio includes WKYU-FM in Bowling Green,
WDCL-FM in Somerset, WKPB-FM in Henderson-Owensboro, and WKUE-FM
in Elizabethtown.
The awards were announced at an Associated Press luncheon
in Louisville.
