WKU Rises To Second In Hearst
Journalism Competition

Bowling Green, Ky. - A strong finish in the final writing competition lifted Western Kentucky University to a second-place overall finish in the 42nd annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program.

In the spot news category, a sixth-place finish by Brian Moore, a Louisville junior, and a 14th-place finish by Micheal Compton, a Bowling Green junior, boosted Western from 16th to 10th in the Intercollegiate Writing Competition.

In the overall competition of writing, photojournalism and broadcasting, Western finished with 530 points, 18 points behind first-place North Carolina and nine points ahead of third-ranked Florida. Northwestern, Penn State, Syracuse, Missouri, Arizona State, San Francisco State and Montana rounded out the top 10.

"We're second in some pretty powerful company," said Jo-Ann Albers, director of the School of Journalism and Broadcasting.

"I am pleased that we finished second in overall scoring in the Hearst competition, even though we were first in the two previous years," she said. "Placing within the top two in three consecutive years is like making the NCAA finals three years in a row -- an almost unheard of feat."

Western was second in the Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition and fourth in the Intercollegiate Broadcast News Competition.

In the spot news category, Moore's sixth-place finish earned a $500 scholarship for him and a matching amount for Western's School of Journalism and Broadcasting.

Four Western students -- photojournalism students Andreas Fuhrmann of Bowling Green and Brian Wagner of Knoxville, Tenn., and broadcasting students Lisa Hughes of Scottsville and Cory Ramsey of Fulton -- will compete in the semifinals of the Hearst competition. National finals are scheduled May 31-June 4 in San Francisco.
