WKU Forensics Team in Top Five in
National Tourney
Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University finished
fourth in speech sweepstakes and second in debate sweepstakes
at the National Forensics Association national tournament last
weekend at Berry College in Rome, Ga.
In speech events, WKU's William E. Bivin Forensic Society
finished behind Bradley, Illinois State and Miami of Ohio. Creighton
won the debate title. The NFA national tournament attracts the
nation's top forensics teams.
Individual results from the April 18-22 event are as follows:
Caleb Williams, a freshman from Lewisville, Texas, national
runner-up in informative speaking, quarterfinalist in persuasive
speaking and rhetorical criticism.
Drew Allen, a sophomore from Brentwood, Tenn., fifth in poetry
interpretation, semifinalist in duo interpretation with Margaret
Au and quarterfinalist in duo interpretation with Keith Blaser.
Joel Smith, a Murray freshman, fourth in after-dinner speaking
and semifinalist in duo interpretation with Katie Tyree.
Rebecca Simms, a Lebanon freshman, sixth in poetry interpretation
and semifinalist in persuasive speaking.
Adam Henze, a freshman from Evansville, Ind., semifinalist
in poetry interpretation and quarterfinalist in duo interpretation
with Elizabeth Au and prose interpretation.
David Laing, a Louisville senior, quarterfinalist in Lincoln-Douglas
debate and was the eighth-place speaker for Lincoln-Douglas debate.
David Burns, a Bowling Green freshman, semifinalist in poetry
interpretation and quarterfinalist in prose interpretation.
Margaret Au, a sophomore from Evansville, Ind., semifinalist
in duo interpretation with Drew Allen.
Katie Tyree, a sophomore from Plymouth, Ind., semifinalist in
duo interpretation with Joel Smith.
Phillip Wininger, a Bowling Green senior, quarterfinalist
in extemporaneous speaking, impromptu speaking, persuasive speaking
and rhetorical criticism.
Elizabeth Au, a freshman from Evansville, Ind., quarterfinalist
in duo interpretation with Adam Henze and in duo interpretation
with Andrew Causey.
Jennifer Purcell, a freshman from Lewisville, Texas, quarterfinalist
in extemporaneous speaking and top 32 in Lincoln-Douglas debate.
Nicole Estenfelder, a Florence freshman, quarterfinalist in
poetry interpretation.
Alisa Ponananta, a Florence senior, quarterfinalist in poetry
interpretation.
Keith Blaser, a junior from Evansville, Ind., quarterfinalist
in duo interpretation with Drew Allen.
Andrew Causey, a sophomore from Franklin, Tenn., quarterfinalist
in duo interpretation with Elizabeth Au.
Stacy Bernaugh, a Bowling Green junior, top 16 in Lincoln-Douglas
debate.
Kate Hertweck, a freshman from Evansville, Ind., top 16 in
Lincoln-Douglas debate.
Sarah Sparks, a Morehead senior, top 32 in Lincoln-Douglas
debate.
Hannah Reliford, a Georgetown freshman, top 32 in Lincoln-Douglas
debate.
Alumnus Adam Black was inducted into the National Forensics
Association Hall of Fame.
Western's 2001-02 season included the overall title at the
Delta Sigma Rho-Tau Kappa Alpha National Tournament and a 14th
consecutive championship in the Kentucky Forensics Association
State Tournament.
