"Gap Creek" Author Robert Morgan To Speak At Fifth Annual Jim Wayne Miller Celebration Of Creative Writing

Bowling Green, Ky. - Robert Morgan, award-winning author of "Gap Creek," will be the featured presenter at this month's Jim Wayne Miller Celebration of Creative Writing.

The fifth annual celebration at Western Kentucky University will take place on Oct. 21, Miller's birthday. Miller, who died in 1996, was a Western professor and author best remembered for his efforts in teaching and promoting creative writing.

Morgan's presentation will begin at 2 p.m. at the Garrett Conference Center auditorium. "Gap Creek," a best-selling novel, was an Oprah Book Club selection in January 2000.

A native of the North Carolina mountains like Miller, Morgan was raised on
land settled by his Welsh ancestors. Morgan earned a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1965 and a master of fine arts from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1968.

Morgan, who teaches English at Cornell University, has written five other books of fiction, including his most recent, "This Rock."

He has published nine volumes of poetry, as well as stories, essays and poems in many magazines, including Atlantic Monthly, New Republic, Poetry, Southern Review, Carolina Quarterly and New England Review.

His awards and honors include four NEA Fellowships, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship, the North Carolina Award for Literature, the Poetry Award from the Fellowship of Southern Writers and two Fiction Awards from the Fellowship of Southern Writers.
