WKU Collecting Food For
"Make It Happen" Day
Bowling Green, Ky. - As part of a campuswide community service initiative, Western Kentucky University's students, faculty and staff hope to collect 20,000 canned goods to feed hungry children.
This week's events will culminate Saturday with "Make It Happen" day. Larry Jones, founder of Feed The Children and recipient of an honorary doctorate from WKU, will speak at 10 a.m. in the Downing University Center theater.
" 'Make It Happen' day is WKU's first-ever community service day for the entire campus," said Heather Strode, coordinator of student leadership/volunteerism. "We envision this collaborative effort to become an annual event."
Through Nov. 5, Western students, faculty and staff may take food items to room 326 of the Downing University Center or to the Feed The Children truck parked on the DUC North Lawn. Feed The Children, based in Oklahoma City, is an international relief agency providing humanitarian aid to areas affected by war, famine or disaster.
"Make It Happen" day activities on Saturday include more than the food drive as 23 student organizations and residence hall groups participate in other service projects. Groups will visit nursing homes, the Humane Society and other agencies, Strode said.
