Communication Week At WKU
Begins Monday, Oct. 22

Bowling Green, Ky. - Visits by the president of the National Communication Association, the British debate team and an ABC soap opera star highlight Communication Week 2001 at Western Kentucky University.

Communication Week (Oct. 22-27) begins Monday with a panel discussion "Let's Talk Business: Organizational Communication in the Workplace." The event begins at 11:15 a.m. in the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center Recital Hall. The panel is scheduled to include Randall Capps, president of Leadership Strategies Group; Craig Sleight, president of Sleight Business Machines; Doris Thomas, vice president of marketing for Commonwealth Health Corp.; Valerie Brown, chief executive officer of Service One Credit Union; and Beth McGowan, manager of Corporate Communication for Federal Express.

Also Monday, John Rowley with Fletcher and Rowley Consulting in Nashville, Tenn., will speak about "Political Communication in the 21st Century." The presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Garrett Conference Center auditorium.

On Tuesday, Dr. James Applegate, president of the National Communication Association, will speak as part of the Department of Communication's Distinguished Lecture Series. His presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.

On Wednesday, the British Debate Team and the WKU Debate Team will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.

On Thursday, a graduate student forum on "Attack on America: A Communication Perspective" will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.

Kassie DePaiva, who plays Blair Buchanan on ABC's "One Life to Live," will visit Western on Friday and Saturday. At 2 p.m. Friday at Grise Hall Auditorium, she'll participate in a roundtable discussion on Communication Careers in the Entertainment Industry.

At 8 p.m. Saturday in Van Meter Auditorium, DePaiva will perform selections from her new CD "Naked" to raise money for the William E. Bivin Forensic Society Scholarship Fund. Judy Woodring, director of WKU's forensics program, was DePaiva's speech and drama teacher at Union County High School.

Tickets for DePaiva's concert are $25 for reserved seats or $18 general admission and are available at the door or by calling the forensics office at (270) 745-6340.
