WKU Students Receive Awards
At Science Conference
Bowling Green, Ky. - Students in Western Kentucky University’s Ogden College of Science and Engineering won three first-place and six second-place awards recently at a state science conference.
The students were honored for their oral paper presentations and poster presentations during a joint meeting of the Kentucky Academy of Science and the Tennessee Academy of Science Nov. 8-10 at Murfreesboro, Tenn.
In the oral presentation portion of the Undergraduate Research Competition, Western students were among 49 who made presentations and received seven of 16 awards given.
Receiving awards for oral paper presentations were:
Jerry Ovensen, a Hodgenville senior, tied for first in botany and microbiology
Roger Greenwell, a Bowling Green junior, second in botany and microbiology
Michael Brockman, a Bowling Green senior, tied for second in cellular and molecular biology and second in mathematics
Eric Crick, a Greenville senior, second in chemistry
Buddy Lagani, a Crestview Hills senior, first in mathematics
Ashley Atkerson, a Woodburn senior, first in science education
In the poster presentation, Western students were among 22 competitors and received two of the six awards given. Receiving poster awards were:
LuAnn Breeding, a Rockfield senior, second in biological sciences
Rachelle Smalley, a Bowling Green senior, and Bianna Smith, a Hazard senior, second in physical sciences
Western’s Applied Research and Technology Program, the university’s first Program of Distinction, provides opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to engage in hands-on research. The program in the Ogden College of Science and Engineering includes 14 centers.
