WKU Students Honored At Model
United Nations Event

Bowling Green, Ky. - Two Western Kentucky University government students were honored recently at the American Model United Nations International conference in Chicago.

Adam Smith, a freshman from Jeffersonville, Ind., and George Mitchell, a Lexington senior, received the outstanding delegation award for representing the Philippines on the United Nations General Assembly Second Committee (Economic and Financial Issues).

Western's team competed in its first Model United Nations conference Nov. 17-20. Fifteen WKU students were among those from more than 60 schools participating in the four-day event in Chicago.

The American Model United Nations is an authentic simulation of the work of the United Nations, including the General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, and International Court of Justice.

"I am very proud of the effort that our Model U.N. team put in to the simulation and I know that they benefited tremendously from the experience," said Dr. Roger Murphy, assistant professor of government. Dr. Murphy, the faculty coach, is assisted by Ronald Morehead.

Other Western students who participated in the conference included:

Evan Floyd, a freshman from West Chester, Ohio, represented the Philippines and Jennifer Barnes, a junior from Fort Irwin, Calif., and Stephen Cawthorn, a Louisville freshman, represented Luxembourg on the General Assembly First Committee (disarmament).

On the Second Committee (economic) Dave Brunner, a freshman from Scottsburg, Ind., and Joshua Richards, a freshman from Sellersburg, Ind., represented Luxembourg.

On the Third Committee (humanitarian) Shawn Quinn, a freshman from Jeffersonville, Ind., and John Law, an Adairville sophomore, represented the Philippines and Brandon Copeland, a Bardstown junior, represented Luxembourg.
