WKU Students Participate In
Regional Math Contest
Bowling Green, Ky. - Five Western Kentucky University students recently participated in the Virginia Tech Regional Mathematics Contest.
The students were: Jeffrey Scott Little of Pikeville, the son of Jeff and Linda Little; Wes Daughtry of Owensboro, the son of Tony and Anita Daughtry; Jaime Johnson of Rochester, the son of Mark and Sheree Johnson; Shannon Wooden of Sonora, the son of Stanley and Debbie Wooden; and Todd Ballard of Chandler, Ind., the son of Glenn and Carol Ballard.
The contest began in 1979 and has more than 40 schools and more than 200 contestants participate in a typical year. Contestants at each participating school take the two and one-half hour exam on their own campus under the supervision of one of their faculty members. Individuals compete for $650 in regional prizes.
Initially conceived as a regional preliminary contest to the annual national William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition, the VTRMC still serves that function at a number of participating schools. Results of the contest will be available later in the fall.
