Western's Public Radio Wins Six 'Best Of
State AP Awards
Bowling Green, Ky. - The Public Radio Service of Western
Kentucky University has earned top honors in six categories in
the Kentucky Associated Press Broadcast Awards. The awards were
announced Wednesday.
News Director Dan Modlin, Assistant News Director Jeanine Howard
Cherry and News Reporter/Producer Kevin Willis earned first place
in the Continuing Coverage category for reports on the tri-modal
transpark controversy.
Cherry also earned first place for Public Service Reporting for
reports on fire safety and Use of Sound for reports on the Balloon
Classic.
Modlin earned a first place enterprise reporting award for an
investigative report on telemarketing fraud. Modlin and Willis
also won a "Best of State" for a radio series on the
dramatic increase in the number of Kentucky students who speak
English as a second language.
WKYU-FM's Mid-day Edition was first in the Best Regularly Scheduled
Live Newscast category. The same program earned national recognition
last year from Public Radio News Directors Inc., finishing second
nationally in Best Daily News Program.
The news staff at Western's Public Radio also earned four second
place awards. They included a report on President Clinton's visit
to Owensboro, a documentary on last year's presidential election,
a breaking spot news story on a hazardous materials incident
and an investigative report on scams related to the Canadian
Lottery.
Western's Public Radio Service includes WKYU-FM in Bowling
Green, WDCL-FM in Somerset, WKPB-FM in Henderson/Owensboro and
WKUE-FM in Elizabethtown.
