State Faculty Group To Meet
In Bowling Green May 20-22
Bowling Green, Ky. - "Building a Scholarly Structure
for Teaching and Learning" is the theme of a three-day conference
next week in Bowling Green.
Faculty from Kentucky colleges and universities will participate
in the Kentucky Conference on the Scholarship of Teaching and
Learning that begins Sunday afternoon at the University Plaza
Hotel and Convention Center. The conference concludes Tuesday.
The Faculty Development Workgroup, an advisory group of the Council
on Postsecondary Education, is hosting the conference as part
of its effort to enhance teaching and learning by developing
a strategic approach to the professional development higher education
teachers.
WKU Provost Barbara Burch will open the three-day conference
at 1 p.m. Sunday. The conference will feature more than 50 presentations
on topics that include student diversity, Web-based instruction,
intellectual properties, the role of personal digital assistants
in the classroom and teaching group decision-making on the Internet.
Keynote speakers include Toru Iiyoshi, senior scholar at the
Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching; Miko Pattie,
director of the Kentucky Virtual Library; Mary Beth Susman, chief
executive officer of the Kentucky Virtual University; and Jim
Applegate, vice president for academic affairs of the Council
on Postsecondary Education.
Other speakers include Ben Boggs, CPE senior associate; Kazi
Javed, associate professor of chemistry at Kentucky State University
and chair of the Faculty Development Workgroup; and Sally Kuhlenschmidt,
director of WKU's Center for Teaching and Learning and a psychology
professor.
The Faculty Development Workgroup consists of one member from
each of Kentucky's public postsecondary institutions and one
member from the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges
and Universities.
