WKU Student Newspaper Wins Awards In KIPA
Contest
Bowling Green, Ky. - The College Heights Herald won nine
first-place awards in the annual Kentucky Intercollegiate Press
Association newspaper contest.
Overall, 30 staff members of Western Kentucky University's student
newspaper received awards during the ceremony Saturday at Eastern
Kentucky University in Richmond.
Students receiving awards included:
Jerry Brewer, a May graduate from Paducah, first in personality
profile, sports feature and sports column; third in overall layout.
H. Rick Mach, a junior from Sterling, Va., first in best original
illustration and sports photo; second in photo essay; honorable
mention in feature photo and news photo.
Travis Mayo, a May graduate from Lexington, first in sports news
story; third in sports column; honorable mention in sports game
story.
Dave Albers, a junior from Montgomery City, Mo., first in feature
photo.
Erica Walsh, a sophomore from Louisville, first in feature story;
third in personality profile.
Krystal Kinnunen, a December graduate from Louisville, first
in photo essay; third in front page layout; honorable mention
in feature photo.
Caroline Lynch, a Louisville junior, second in news story; honorable
mention in continuing news.
Rex Hall Jr., a Louisville sophomore, second in news story.
Mattias Karen, a senior from Uppsula, Sweden, second in investigative
reporting; second in deadline editing.
Jim Gaines, a December graduate from Bowling Green, second in
investigative reporting; honorable mention in continuing news,
editorial and photo essay.
Brett Corbin, a Prospect junior, second in deadline writing competition.
Charlie Lanter, a December graduate from Lexington, second in
editorial; honorable mention in opinion page.
Cara VanLeuven, a May graduate from Fort Wayne, Ind., second
in news photo; honorable mention in photo essay.
Wendi Thompson, a junior from Pensacola, Fla., second in feature
photo and sports photo.
Cassandra Shie, a senior from Sterling, Va., second in photo
essay; honorable mention in photo essay.
Justin Fowler, a Columbia sophomore, second in photo essay.
Brian Moore, a Louisville sophomore, third in sports game story;
honorable mention in sports news story.
Lyndsay Sutton, a Shelbyville junior, third in sports feature
story; honorable mention in sports game story.
Shannon Back, a May graduate from Mount Sterling, third in overall
layout.
Ryan Clark, a Louisville junior, third in feature page layout;
honorable mention in sports page layout.
Jason Ragan, a Rineyville senior, honorable mention in continuing
news.
Jacob Bennett, a Brandenburg senior, honorable mention in feature
story.
Havard Haarstad, a junior from Molde, Norway, honorable mention
in feature story.
Taylor Loyal, a senior from Roanoke, Va., honorable mention in
reviews.
Brian Grady, a Bowling Green freshman, honorable mention in editorial
cartoon.
Jaclyn McCabe, a senior from Berne, Ind., honorable mention in
news photo and photo essay.
Heather Hardesty, an Owensboro senior, honorable mention in advertising
design and advertising campaign.
Tina Ashford, a senior from Nashville, Tenn., honorable mention
in advertising art.
Scarlett Blandford, a Utica senior, honorable mention in advertising
campaign.
Kyle Hightower, a Paducah freshman, honorable mention in sports
column and sports feature.
Travis Williams, a Louisville junior, honorable mention in sports
feature.
