Veterans Upward Bound Presents Annual Awards
Bowling Green, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University Veterans
Upward Bound program presented several awards to participants
recently at its 2001 Annual Awards Banquet.
Edwin Phelps of Bowling Green received the Beyond the Call of
Duty Award to recognize his assistance in the past two years.
Phelps helped secure a $1,000 donation from Veterans of Foreign
Wars Post 5712 that will be used to support the program.
Brian Vincent of Bowling Green received the Alumni of the Year
Award. Vincent graduated magna cum laude from Western on May
6 with a bachelor's degree in biology and pre-medicine. In June,
he will enter the U.S. Navy flight training program in Pensacola,
Fla.
Oscar Davis of Bowling Green received the Dare to Dream Award.
Davis is studying in the Veterans Upward Bound program to enter
Western Kentucky University.
Don Burton of Bowling Green received the Student of the Year
Award. Burton, a graduate of the Veterans Upward Bound program,
has been accepted for enrollment this fall in the WKU Department
of Engineering.
At the banquet Sherry Reid, chair of the Division of Academic
Support at the Bowling Green Community College, spoke to students
about the value of attending the community college before entering
the WKU main campus. Reid is a former part-time teacher in the
Veteran Upward Bound program.
The awards banquet was held May 4 at the University Plaza Hotel
and Convention Center.
Veterans Upward Bound is accepting applicants for fall 2001
