WKU Students Honored In Hearst Journalism
Contests
Bowling Green, Ky. - Two Western Kentucky University students
have qualified for the semifinals in the broadcast competition
of the 41st annual William Randolph Hearst Foundation's Journalism
Awards Program.
In radio competition, Aimee Reed, a senior from Columbia,
finished third in the feature story competition and received
a $1,000 award. Julie Goodwin, a senior from Louisville,
finished fifth and received a $600 award.
In television competition, Amy Jones, a senior from Morehead,
finished ninth and received a $500 award.
Western's School of Broadcasting and Journalism will receive
matching awards.
After the first of two broadcasting contests, Western is in first
place followed by Alabama, Syracuse, Utah and Florida. Final
winners will be named in April.
The Hearst Journalism Awards Program recognizes excellence in
writing, photography and broadcasting. In last year's competition,
Western won the overall intercollegiate title for the first time
in school history. Western has won the photojournalism competition
for 11 consecutive years.
In the second of six writing competitions, Jim Gaines,
a December graduate from Bowling Green, tied for 18th in the
editorial writing competition. Gaines is a reporter in Vero Beach,
Fla.
