Bowling Green, Ky. - Two Western Kentucky University photojournalism
students have been honored in the 41st annual William Randolph
Hearst Foundation's Journalism Awards Program.
Andrew Otto, a December graduate from Vail, Colo., finished
eighth in the sports and news photography competition. Otto,
an intern at the Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch, and Western's School
of Journalism and Broadcasting will receive matching $500 awards.
H. Rick Mach, a junior from Sterling, Va., finished in
a tie for 12th place.
After the second of three photo competitions, Western is second
behind the University of Florida. Other schools in the top five
are Ball State University, University of Montana and Ohio University.
Western has won the Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition
for 11 consecutive years.
In last year's Hearst competition, which recognizes excellence
in writing, broadcasting and photography, Western won the overall
intercollegiate title for the first time ever.
In this year's broadcasting competition, Western is in first
place after the first of two contests. In the writing competition,
Western is in 10th place after four of six contests. Final winners
will be announced in April.
