Author Susan Bordo To
Visit WKU On Feb. 28
Bowling Green, Ky. - Susan Bordo, author of "The Male
Body: A New Look at Men in Public and in Private," will
visit Western Kentucky University Feb. 28.
Bordo, a professor of English and Women's Studies, is the Otis
A. Singletary Chair in Humanities at the University of Kentucky.
Her slide presentation on "The Rediscovery of the Male Body"
begins at 8 p.m. at the Garrett Conference Center auditorium.
"The Male Body" has earned critical acclaim and has
been featured in numerous magazine, radio and television reports.
Bordo lectures on contemporary culture and the body, featuring
topics such as eating disorders, cosmetic surgery, beauty and
evolutionary theory, racism and the body, masculinity and the
male body, sexual harassment, and the impact of the media.
Her 1993 book "Unbearable Weight: Feminism, Western Culture
and the Body" focused attention on the role of cultural
images in the spread of eating problems. The book was nominated
for a Pulitzer Prize. Her other books include "The Flight
to Objectivity: Essays and Cartesianism and Culture" and
"Twilight Zones: The Hidden Life of Cultural Images from
Plato to O.J."
Bordo's presentation is sponsored by Women's Studies and co-sponsored
by Potter College, Folk Studies, English, Sociology and the Rodes-Helm
Lecture Series.
