Facts About Commencement
Ceremonies At WKU

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University will observe its 150th Commencement on Dec. 15 at Diddle Arena. Here are some facts about the tradition:

• First graduate: In 1908, Miss Flora M. Stallard was the first graduate from the Life Teaching Certificate Course at Western Kentucky State Normal School.
• First presentation of bachelor's degrees: June 1924
• Number of Western graduates: 95,500 (836 will receive degrees on Dec. 15)
• First commencement in Diddle Arena: May 1964
• First December commencement: 1996
• Last summer commencement: August 1981
• Return to outdoor ceremony, introduction of the University Mace, singing of "My Old Kentucky Home," addition of color guard: May 1998
