Two WKU Students To Compete In Hearst National
Finals
Bowling Green, Ky. - Two Western Kentucky University students
will compete in the national finals of the William Randolph Hearst
Foundation Journalism Awards Program.
Caroline Lynch, a Louisville junior, won first place in
spot news writing, the last of six writing competitions, for
a story in the Lexington Herald-Leader on the cave rescue of
Chris Groves. The first-place finish sends Lynch to the national
writing competition in June. Lynch and the WKU School of Journalism
and Broadcasting will receive matching awards of $2,000.
Aimee Reed, a Columbia senior, is one of six finalists
in broadcasting. Her Hearst entry included radio stories on a
70-year-old man's memories of his two-room schoolhouse in Casey
County and on Martin Luther King III's visit to WKU.
Amber T. Woolfolk, a Los Angeles junior, is a national semifinalist
in photo and will submit a portfolio in May before learning whether
she is one of six finalists chosen.
The national finals are June 8-11 in San Francisco. Western has
won the overall Hearst competition for two consecutive years.
This year Western finished first in broadcasting, second in photojournalism
and seventh in writing.
