Why Engineering Technology Management?

Technology and engineering management is vitally important for both private and public-sector organizations that must manage the fast pace of technological change. Today, all businesses and public organizations are managed with and through technology. Understanding the technological and engineering basis of management activities is essential for modern management. For example, information technology is used in planning, operations, and marketing. Product and production technologies are used in designing and producing products. Service technologies are used to deliver consumer value. Emerging technologies impact the entire organizational structure and its operation.

The Master of Science in Engineering Technology Management develops leaders to support the needs of the modern world-wide industry.  The curriculum enhances both career and personal objectives.  Graduates of the program are equipped to manage organization resources, lead technological change, and strategically integrate higher- level knowledge within their companies.

The Master of Science in Engineering Technology Management (MSETM) provides a broad-based core of management competency in business functions, along with a solid understanding of engineering technologies, and capabilities. Courses build upon existing technical competency while allowing the student to customize their depth of study in specific management technologies that enhance long-term professional career goals.

How is this degree different from an MBA?

MBA programs traditionally emphasize management by the numbers, i.e., using financial measures to gage performance, marketing analysis to forecast profitability, etc., along with organizational behavior. The MSTM program, on the other hand, builds upon your technical expertise and adds the managerial aspects of leading in a technologically-rich environment. Our graduate students learn about economics and organizational behavior, quality systems, project management, legal and ethical issues, supply chains, and emerging technologies. If you plan to manage engineering or technical professionals, our program is one to choose. (For more on this question, see the FAQs.)

Our graduates generally pursue careers in four primary categories:
Managers
Engineers
Entrepreneurs
Educators
