Dr. James Babcock, Professor of French, died suddenly of heart failure in December 2001.
Dr. Paul Hatcher, died in November 2001 after a long illness. Dr. Hatcher came to WKU in 1959 as department head and professor of Spanish. Before he retired in 1986, Dr. Hatcher also served as the first Director of International Programs. His son, Dr. Graham Hatcher, established the Paul G. and Ernestine G. Hatcher Modern Language Lecture Series in 2004.

Dr. Jim Wayne Miller, Professor of German and noted Kentucky poet, passed away unexpectedly in August 1996. Each year his memory is honored at a literary festival and workshop on campus. The Kentucky Writers Coalition has also established an annual poetry prize in his name.
