Jay Patel, a 3rd year medical student at the University of Louisville, is helping to present “What’s in a Doctor’s Bag?”, a pilot program created by UK and Humana. Jay is completing his Family Practice Clinical Rotation with Dr. Brian Macy at the Graves Gilbert Clinic, coordinated by the South Central AHEC.
The “What’s in a Doctor’s Bag?” program is a pilot program developed by the University of Kentucky with funding from Humana to improve Health Literacy. It is being piloted in KY first and then, after being evaluated in June, may be marketed nationwide. The 10 week curriculum targeting preschoolers covers “what’s in a doctor’s bag”/the tools a doctor might use, what to expect at a doctor’s visit, and also goes more in depth about germs, the eyes, heart, bones, etc.
Two WKU/AHEC HOSA students, Adrienne Beck and DeAnn Wright are presenting the program at WKU Head Start in Jones Jaggers every Tuesday.
