Looking for new cave passages

Wittenberg University geology students use Electrical Resistivity Ground Imaging to look for cave passages near the park.

Monitoring the use of backcountry caves.

Park staff and the MCICSL Research Director discuss using light detectors to monitor the use of backcountry caves.

Measuring algae growth under different lighting conditions.

Mammoth Cave ecologist, Rick Olson, sets up an experimental apparatus to measure the amount of algae growth that occurs under different lighting conditions. MCICSL is co-lead on this project, which is also taking place at four other national parks.

Superintendent's presentation on science-informed decision making at the park.

In October 2008, Mammoth Cave National Park Superintendent Pat Reed presented a paper at the National Congress of the Asociacion Cuevas Turisticas Espanolas (Association of Spanish Tourist Caves) in Santander, Spain. The paper focused on the importance of science-informed decision making in the management of Mammoth Cave National Park's resources.

Geoscience Teacher in the Park documenting a spring.

A 2007 Geoscience Teacher in the Park intern documents the location of a spring. During the summer, the Geoscience Teacher Interns obtained GPS coordinates for many of the springs located on the park. The data were used to create a springs dataset to be used by park resource managers.

Learning about cave insects and arachnids.

A researcher talks to a TSU biology class about her current research on cave crickets, cave beetles, and one of the species of spiders that can be found in the cave.

KAEE field experience

Kentucky Association for Environmental Education 2007 conference participants had the opportunity to attend an all day field experience at Mammoth Cave National Park. One of the stops included a roadside geology lesson.

Smoke writing in the cave.

Researchers study historical signatures in the cave to learn more about who was visiting Mammoth Cave in the 1800s and where they were from. Today it is illegal to sign your name in the cave and doing so is considered an act of vandalism.

Monitoring cave cricket populations.

The Cumberland Piedmont Network's Cave Ecologist and a Science and Resources Management intern participate in an ongoing cave cricket inventory and monitoring project.

Collecting a water sample in the cave.

A Science and Resources Management intern collects a water sample from inside the cave. The data from this project will help researchers determine where the water that drips on some of the cave trails comes from.

Learning about the cultural history of Mammoth Cave

Participants in a public workshop about the cultural resources at Mammoth Cave learn about the work of the CCC camps.

Studying the hydrology of Mammoth Cave's rivers

An advanced science middle school class is working with MCICSL staff to conduct research on the flow patterns of one of Mammoth Cave's underground research. Their project involves collecting data in underground rivers and in the Green River.

Exhibits filming

Mammoth Cave National Park is planning to install to install an exhibits section in its new Visitor Center. Filming for the audio visual portion of the exhibits was done in 2010.

The following papers, proceedings, abstracts, and other publications have been written by MCICSL staff or other scientists. They provide an overview of the many different fields of research conducted at Mammoth Cave National Park. Whenever possible, direct links to the publications have been provided. When direct links to the publications were not available, links to the abstracts have been provided instead.
