What is M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan?
M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan is WKU's five day extended orientation program, designed to assist first year residential students in their transition from home and high school to college. Program participants move to campus a week before classes begin and benefit from the opportunity to get acclimated to campus before the upperclassmen arrive, and begin building a social support network. Educational sessions, special events, and evening social activities provide program participants with opportunities to learn tips of the trade from student leaders, meet new people, and identify resources to help them succeed in and out of the classroom.
Who is eligible to attend M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan?
All first-time WKU residential students are invited to participate in M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan (includes transfer and non-traditional students). First-time WKU commuter students are invited to participate in MPC, M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan's Commuter Program.
Is there a cap placed on the number of students who can attend M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan?
No. All first-time WKU residential students are invited and encouraged to attend.
What if I don't plan on living on campus? Can I still attend M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan?
M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan is designed with residential students in mind, but don't worry! We have a program designed especially for you, the commuter student! Learn more about MPC, M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan's Commuter Program
How much does M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan cost?
The fee to participate in M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan is $100 if you sign up before August 13th. Beginning August 13th, the registration fee is $125.
What is included in the $100 fee?
The $100 fee includes your lodging and meals for the week, along with a program t-shirt, lanyard, and entrance to all the special events and social activities.
How do I sign up to participate in M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan?
Signing up to participate in M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan is easy! You can register online through Topnet with a credit or debit card, or download and print a paper application to mail in with a check or money order. Choose the method that's easiest for you!
What is expected of me as a program participant?
M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan participants are expected to attend all daytime educational sessions and special events, as well as take advantage of the opportunities to socialize with fellow classmates at the evening social activities. Come to M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan with a positive attitude, great enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn! The M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan staff works hard all year long to ensure each year's program is the best it can be, with fun, engaging, and interactive sessions. But, your participation will be the determining factor in how much you enjoy the experience. We give 110% and we're hoping you'll do the same!
When will I be able to move into my residence hall room?
M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan move-in will begin on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at 8am. All program participants will be required to attend a floor meeting on their residence hall floor beginning at 6pm Sunday evening. Volunteers will be on hand to assist with move-in until 4pm Sunday afternoon. Be sure to bring your own dollies and carts as none will be provided. When you move in to participate in M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan, you will move directly into your fall housing assignment; so, you only have to move in once!
How many meals will be provided during the week?
Each M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan participant will be provided with 6 meals to use during the week beginning at breakfast on Monday and ending at dinner on Wednesday; regular semester meal plans will begin Thursday at lunch. Be sure to purchase, or bring extra cash to purchase, additional snacks, drinks, or late-night pizza!
When does M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan start?
M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan begins with a meeting on your residence hall floor at 6pm on Sunday evening with your Resident Assistant who will provide you with important information to guide you through your first week on the hill. The official M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan kick-off event, Convocation, will take place Sunday night at 8pm at the Stadium (don't worry, your RA will help you find it).
When does M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan end?
M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan week concludes with a huge spirit competition which typically lasts until 8:30pm Thursday night. Fall semester classes begin Monday, August 26, 2013.
What goes on during M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan?
During the daytime M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan participants engage in educational sessions and informational workshops that cover a variety of topics; from how to live with a roommate, manage your money and take advantage of grants and scholarships, to how to prepare for the college classroom. The sessions are designed with the first-year student in mind, providing essential information and resources to ensure success.
During the evening, social activities including comedian and hypnotist performances, outdoor movies, ghost story tours, and live concerts (just to name a few) provide new students with opportunities to form social connections and meet new people.
Several special events take place during M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan week as well:
- Convocation: official welcome ceremony and program kick-off event
- College Luncheons: opportunity to engage with WKU faculty, staff, and administrators
- CloseUp Theatre Troupe: scenes of college life
- WK&U: student talent showcase
- Big Red's Blitz: community service event
- Campus and Community Involvement Fair: collect information about WKU's 300+ student clubs and organizations

Is my attendance at educational sessions, special events, and social activities mandatory?
The M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan program is designed to assist you in your transition from home and high school to college; vital information pertaining to your success both in and out of the college classroom will be provided to you during M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan week. Your participation in the week's educational sessions, special events, and social activities are mandatory if you plan to gain all you can from the program. As a program participant, please note that your attendance at educational sessions, special events, and social activities will be tracked.
Will my friends and family be able to visit me during M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan?
Visitors are allowed on WKU's campus at all times; however, residence hall visitation is abbreviated (8pm - 12am every night) during the M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan week, and is limited to fellow M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan participants. So, only friends and family members attending M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan with you will be able to visit during the week. Regular residence hall visitation will begin on Thursday, August 22, 2013.
Will I have to leave campus after M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan is over?
No. Once you move in to your fall housing assignment, you will be able to stay on-campus until your hall officially closes for Thanksgiving break.
When will I register for classes?
Registration is a key component of your ATP (Academic Transitions Program) day. During your ATP day on-campus, you'll meet your Academic Advisor, register for classes, and have the opportunity to take care of any school-related business (i.e. taking a residence hall tour, paying your housing deposit, selecting and purchasing your meal plan, visiting student financial assistance, etc.). To select a day and register to attend ATP, log in to Topnet and select "Academic Transition Program-Orientation" from the Main Menu.
