(LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST CERTIFICATION)

1.   12-15 Sem. Hours

      A.  LME 501 Program Organization and Administration

      B.  LME 502 Collection Management

      C.  Research Tool (For a first master’s LME 519 Special Topics--Research in LME, EDFN 500 Research Methods, or EXED 534 Seminar: Research in Exceptional Child Education. A minimum grade of "B" is required for this class.

            If for a second master’s degree, the research class from the first one can be counted if it will not be older than 6 years by the completion of program.  If not, a program area quiz on research terminology is required.  A closely aligned study guide is available.)

      D.  LME 512 Issues in Library Media Education (Within first 15 to 18 hours of your program in order to develop the plan for your professional portfolio that is submitted in the LME 590 Practicum)

      E.   3-6 sem. hours from other core courses:

            LME 535 Survey of Educational Technology Practices

            LME 537 Principles of Educational Technology Applications

      F.   Completion of Admission to Candidacy Form-DAfter the research tool requirement is met and 12 sem. hours are completed but before the completion of 21 semester hours, the Admission to Candidacy Form-D must be filled-out, signed and sent to the advisor.  The Form D can be printed from the Office for Graduate Studies website.

 3.   24 – 33 Sem. Hours

      A.  3-6 sem. hours from other courses:

            LME 518 Advanced Children’s Literature

            LME 527   Thematic Approach to Young Adult Literature

            NOTE:  Depending on one’s primary certification and knowledge of the content for LME 518 and 527, electives may be substituted for these two courses:  LME 410G Storytelling, LME 411G Creative Media Experiences, or the advanced technology classes (LME 545 and 547) or appropriate courses outside of LME with approval of the advisor.

 B.  LME 590 Practicum The LME 590 Practicum is taken in the last semester (fall/spring only).  This class requires 120 field hours and a professional portfolio based on evidence produced across their program of study.  Most students also take the PRAXIS during this semester.  For these reasons, the faculty strongly recommend that students do not take any other classes in this semester. Students must complete a minimum of 24 hours of coursework including LME 510, 512, 535, 537, and the research tool and be admitted to candidacy.

      C.  Register for the Praxis II Specialty Exam for Library Media Specialist The PRAXIS exam is required for certification as a library media specialist and should be taken near the end of the program. The PRAXIS exam for library media specialists is administered by the Educational Testing Services. Additional information is online at http://www.ets.org.  An information sheet for preparation for the exam is available from one’s academic advisor.
