UNDERGRADUATE MINOR

INTRODUCTION

The undergraduate minor in library media education  requires a minimum of 18-24 semester hours of coursework. Courses cover the areas of organization and administration, reference skills, children's and young adult literature, and educational technology.  Required courses are LME 445 and 448 and 12-18 semester hours of electives chosen with the approval of a departmental advisor in consideration of a student's prior work experience, academic work, and career goals. (The undergraduate LME minor does not lead to teacher certification as a library media specialist.  Certification as library media specialist is obtained at the master’s level.)

COURSES

Three to nine hours of the undergraduate minor may be taken online from the Kentucky Virtual University - KYVU - through Bluegrass Community and Technical College. (http://www.bluegrass.kctcs.edu)  For these courses to be counted toward the WKU undergraduate minor, students must enroll and pay tuition through the KYVU and transfer the courses to WKU after completing them. Students who must maintain full time student status at WKU are advised to maintain this status at WKU (12 hours per semester) while taking courses with the KYVU.

PUBLIC LIBRARIES

Public library certification requires nine semester hours credit in the following professional content areas: Media Organization and Administration, Collection Development/Building, Classification and Cataloging, and Reference or equivalents. Courses in these areas are available from the Kentucky Virtual University-KYVU. Other required courses for public library certification are LME 318, 407, 445, and 448 and at least 6-9 hours selected from LME 409, 410, 411, and 475.
