General Program Information - Program Description

The Master of Science degree in Library Media Education is a dual track program in information service and educational technology. It may be used for the Kentucky Rank II or Rank I pay status. The degree prepares persons for service as library media specialists, training development specialists, educational technology specialists, and information service specialists in schools, colleges, public libraries, and private organizations. The program has one degree with two focus areas in Library Media Education or Educational Technology, an endorsement in Instructional Computer Technology and a certificate in Educational Technology. Teacher certification is not a requirement for admission to the program.

Program Accreditation:

The Library Media Education Program is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and recognized by the American Association for School Librarians (AASL) as an accredited school library media program.

Degree Program Focus Areas, Certification, Endorsements, Certificates, and Rank Change

There are two master's degree program focus areas, one certification, one endorsement, and one certificate available for students in the LME program.

M.S. Library Media Education - School Media Librarian P-12, Experienced Teacher Certification Focus: The School Media Librarian P-12 Focus (LMS)  is designed to fulfill the requirements for Kentucky state certification as a P-12 Library Media Specialist.

M.S. Library Media Education - Educational Technology, Experienced Teacher Certification Focus: The Educational Technology Focus is for students who are interested in working as school or district technology specialists and are pursuing an Instructional Computer Technology Endorsement, P-12 (ICTE)

M.S. Library Media Education - Educational Technology Focus, Educational Technology Certificate: The Educational Technology, Certificate Focus is for those who want to be business/information technology trainers, or who work with trainers to incorporate technology into instruction and work with employees in their use of technology; this program offers the Educational Technology Certificate but no Experienced Teacher ICTE Endorsement.

Both the EDTECH and LME  program focus areas allow students the opportunity for professional rank change in Kentucky from the Education Professional Standards Board at the Rank II or Rank I levels depending on previous course work.

Instructional Computer Technology Endorsement, P-12: Based on Kentucky Teacher Technology Standards, this graduate ICTE endorsement program provides students educational technology skills, including the design and curriculum integration techniques of multimedia presentations, web pages, databases, spreadsheets, instructional software, digital video/audio editing, desktop publishing and more. Students will also acquire knowledge of and ability to troubleshoot standard hardware, software, and peripheral devices. This graduate endorsement program will enhance the experiences of classroom teachers, interns, or school administrators in incorporating technology into instruction and assisting students/teachers in their use of technology. Candidates must already have teachers certification to be eligible for this endorsement. This endorsement can be planned as part of the LMS or EDTECH Focus in Library Media Education, as part of a fifth year program, as a professional area of a Rank I program, or as an endorsement only program for educators possessing a Rank II certification.

Educational Technology Certificate: The graduate Educational Technology Certificate program provides students essential technology skills including the design and curriculum integration techniques of multimedia presentations, web pages, databases, spreadsheets, instructional software, digital video/audio editing, desktop publishing and more. Students will also acquire knowledge of and ability to troubleshoot standard hardware, software, and peripheral devices. This graduate endorsement program will enhance the experiences of classroom teachers, interns, or school administrators in incorporating technology into instruction and assisting students/teachers in their use of technology. Students in the ICTE Endorsement area of the EDTECH program may also add the Educational Technology Certificate to their university transcripts.

Initial Certification for School Media Librarian, P-12 :
A person with no prior teacher certification at the undergraduate level can obtain certification as a P-12 Library Media Specialist in Kentucky with the LMS Focus.  This requires admission to Graduate Studies and Teacher Education at WKU.  The process for being admitted to Teacher Education is based on gaining admission to the LME program and completing an admissions packet for Teacher Education at WKU.  Completion of the program certifies the individual only as a P-12 LMS in Kentucky and not a classroom teacher.
