NP-2 Camp, Company 543, was
established on November 16, 1933. The camp was located near the
New Entrance of Mammoth Cave. The enrollees in this camp were responsible
for fire hazard reduction work done in the park area, cleaning up
thousands of acres. The enrollees worked to take down undesirable
structures on newly acquired land, and saved all useable lumber
and nails for future projects. They installed cave gates, drained
and leveled a stock pond, maintained the public picnic grounds,
performed fire patrols, worked at a quarry in the park crushing
rock to be used in various projects, constructed table and benches,
and transported supplies and equipment throughout the park, along
with many other projects.
NP-2 Camp was disbanded in 1943.
