The Railroad Comes to Warren County


Age: 4th grade and above

Objectives:

  • Introduce students to the geographic landscape of the area.
  • Develop an understanding of how the development of the railroad and the various depots influenced economics in Bowling Green and Warren County.

Preparation:

Students should study the geographical landscapes of the Bowling Green and Glasgow areas from Louisville to Nashville by comparing maps from the late 1800s to the early 1900s to present day maps of the area during present time.

Instructions:

  • Compare historic and present-day maps and note the differences between the areas around Bowling Green and Glasgow then and now. Have students create a map which demonstrates the route from Louisville to Nashville via Glasgow, and the route from Louisville to Nashville via Bowling Green. Use materials to create a three-dimensional map.
  • Have students discuss the economic benefits of the railroad to Bowling Green compared to those of Glasgow. Discuss the possibilities had the railroad been routed through Glasgow instead of Bowling Green. Compare the mileage between the two routes from Louisville to Nashville via Glasgow and via Bowling Green.
