Item/Collection Note: Elizabeth Cox Underwood discusses the planning and construction of their house Ironwood in several letters written to her husband Joseph Rogers Underwood, while he was serving in the U. S. Senate from 1847 to 1853. The image depicts the original house. Ironwood has been occupied, more or less continually to the present, although it has undergone many renovations and changes.
