Note: Joseph Rogers Underwood of Bowling Green, Kentucky,
kept a journal sporadically while serving as a state legislator
in Frankfort. On December 4, 1826, he expresses his views
objecting to party discipline and writes:
"I
despise the political juggler & all under hand management,
& had rather dwell in obscurity with the proud consciousness
of self worth, than live in the temple of fame, blazened in
the worlds eye, yet suffocating beneath a knowledge of my
own meanness."
