Item/Collection Note: Joseph Rogers Underwood of Bowling Green, Kentucky, kept a journal sporadically while serving as a state legislator in Frankfort. On December 4, 1826, he expresses his views objecting to party discipline and writes:

"I despise the political juggler & all under hand management, & had rather dwell in obscurity with the proud consciousness of self worth, than live in the temple of fame, blazened in the worlds eye, yet suffocating beneath a knowledge of my own meanness."
