Note: Elizabeth Cox Underwood, wife of U. S. Senator Joseph
Rogers Underwood of Bowling Green, Kentucky, writes in her
November 22, 1849 letter to him:
"This commences the first of a series of letters, which
to my sorrow will be continued through a period of ten months,
interminable in the thoughts of a loving wife. I hope that
it will greet you on your arrival at Washington, and its contents
will prove to you that I have entered on my duties as agent,
immediately after your departure." |
