Note: Henry, the fifteen-year-old son of U. S. consul to Glasgow,
Scotland, Warner Lewis Underwood, began keeping his journal
on January 2, 1863. Henry's ambivalent attitude regarding
Scotland is evident in his various entries as one day he exalts
Scotland, but a couple of days later he exclaims that he wishes
very much that he could go home. His recorded thoughts on
May 6, 1863, are: "To day was very hot and rainey so
we could have no games in school and had a very dull day as
I generaly do in this horid place scotland." |
