Underwood Collection

What happens when a Kentucky politician marries a Washington social butterfly? Elizabeth Cox Underwood can tell you through the 350 letters between 1849-1853 which she penned and received from Joseph Rogers Underwood (1791-1876), U.S. Senator. Anxious for word from the political realm she had left, Elizabeth kept Joseph informed about their children, supervision of Bowling Green household and farm, including sending former slaves to Liberia, and community activities. She even built a home that you can reconstruct through the details of her letters.
