Serving
as a founding member of the Select Committee on Astronautics
and Space Exploration, Congressman Natcher maintained his
interest in our space program until his death.
"For a number of years now each week I have written a
letter to our grandchildren. I know that on many occasions
they are more concerned with the enclosure.... a little spending
money for each of them....... At times it is difficult to
think of something to talk to them about....." [Journal
vol. XXXVI, p. 9601-2, 1Sept. 3, 1976]
On March 18, 1986, Congressman Natcher's letter to grandsons
William and Peter talked about the explosion of the "Challenger
Shuttle and the loss of all of the crew" and his service
on the Select Committee on Astronautics and Space Exploration.
"I am the only Member of the 26 who served on the committee
who is still a Member of Congress and for years now I have
followed all of the important achievements of the space program
..... Our accomplishments in outer space are historical and
ones that we can be proud of at all times." |
