Fashion Illustrations at the Kentucky Library & Museum

The Kentucky Library & Museum fashion collection includes fashion plates and illustrations from catalogs, magazines, newspapers, patterns, pattern books, and sheet music. Fashion plates were originally a means of illustrating the current styles at the time and were usually found in ladies' magazines. Because of limited magazines and catalogs, people viewed sheet music to keep up with the fashion trends. Sheet music usually included photographs of celebrities at the time or stylized art drawings.

Please be aware that these materials represent a sampling of what is available in the Kentucky Library. In some instances, such as the patterns and pattern books, the illustrations accessible online provide a sense of the range of the collection with many more examples available for viewing on-site. Future plans call for the addition of other categories of fashion illustrations such as photography and catalogs. Consult a reference librarian in the Kentucky Library for further information.
