Throughout
the Civil War, music inspired and soothed the spirits of soldiers,
families and friends left behind. Popular themes included
mother love, wartime separation, bravery and heroism. Among
the songs popular in the era were pre-war compositions which
echoed these concepts. Often included in bound volumes of
piano music donated by Kentuckians, these scores are representative
of the sheet music collected by the Kentucky Library and Museum
in the last seventy-five years.
