Kentucky Library Broadside Collection # S141
Patent Medicines
Patent medicines were heavily advertised in periodicals during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was common for these advertisements to include testimonials about the product’s efficacy. This broadside for "Stanton’s Harmless Headache Powders" is typical for the period. Many times the product’s benefits were gradually exaggerated. This product claims it could cure headaches related to "over-eating, fatigue of body or mind, alcoholic excesses, exposure to the sun, and the various forms of neuralgia." The broadside was undoubtedly printed by the manufacturer, but local job printers could customize them for local drugstores. J.I. Younglove & Brother was located in the Quigley Building on Bowling Green’s Fountain Square for many years.
Gift of the Calvert Estate, n.d.
