Curing Tobacco
Kentucky Library Broadside Collection #254 (Tobacco, John W. Barnett Tobacco Curing)
Tobacco remains one of Kentucky’s most important cash crops. This broadside explains a new patented process for curing leaf tobacco developed by John W. Barnett of Big Spring, Virginia. The process involved using water that was poured near the fires during curing. This allowed for curing at a slower rate, which permitted green portions from "setting" thus producing a superior yellow product. Most of the tobacco in southcentral Kentucky is air-cured in barns, however tobacco in western Kentucky is fire cured.
