Paul Garrett

Biography

Paul Garrett was born November 2, 1893 in Waddy, Shelby County, Kentucky. He received bachelor's and master's degrees from Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky and attended graduate school at the University of Chicago and at the University of Kentucky. Garrett served as a high school principal for several years before becoming superintendent in 1924 of the city schools at Versailles in Woodford County, Kentucky. In 1937, Garrett became personnel director in the administration of Governor A. B. "Happy" Chandler. Later that same year, after the death of Henry Hardin Cherry, Chandler appointed Garrett as Western's second president. Dr. Garrett presided over continued growth and diversification during his eighteen year tenure and, like Cherry, served as president until his death on February 28.
