Collection
Have you ever thought about how much you can
learn from a map? We have 1700 of them dating from 1720 to
2000. Our researchers are drawn to the ones dealing with the
Civil War, topographical maps issued by the U. S. Geological
Survey, and the Sanborn maps of Kentucky cities. The rarest
ones in the collection are early river charts of the Green
River, a number of hand-drawn maps, and those of Dutch cartographer
Herman Moll, whose maps were published in England in the 1720s.
We even have two maps of planned frontier communities that
never developed. Compare our national and state highway maps
to see the amazing development of automobile routes during
the twentieth century.
