About Manuscripts and Folklife Archives

Manuscripts holdings are unpublished materials, chiefly concerning Kentucky and Kentuckians, and include letters; diaries; account books and business papers; literary papers; church and institutional minutes; theses; land grants; political papers; court records and a variety of other memorabilia. The materials document local, national, and even international events, and reveal details about day-to-day life in many settings and on varied levels, mainly in 19th and 20th century Kentucky. Among the major collections are: William H. Natcher, Tim Lee Carter, Civil War, Courtney Ellis, Janice Holt Giles, Alice Hegan Rice, Green family, South Union Shakers, 20th Century Wars and the Underwood family.

Folklife Archives holdings consist of papers and projects generated by folk studies undergraduate, graduate, and faculty members coupled with reel-to-reel, audio, and videotape interviews and performances (some transcripts), about folk ways, folk songs, folk beliefs, and regional speech patterns. Two of the outstanding collections of individuals are those of Lynwood Montell and Sarah Gertrude Knott.
