Reviewing
Sources
The Romance Reader
http://www.theromancereader.com
The
Romance Reader reviews romances and sometimes
mysteries, science fiction and mainstream novels with a romantic
element. Current reviews are listed by category (historical,
contemporary, category, regency and paranormal). After a period
of time, they are moved to the archives where they are listed by
the author's last name. It also has special features,
interviews and contests. The reviews are well written and
this site really critiques the books - they do not simply praise
everything. The books are rated from one to five hearts.
All About Romance
http://www.likesbooks.com
This site reviews
romances and some other popular books. The current reviews
are listed by the author's last name and after a period of time,
they are moved into the archived review section where they are listed
by author's last name. There is a review section called
Desert Island Keepers where readers can send reviews of books they
consider to be outstanding. The reviews on this site are longer
and, like the reviews at The Romance Reader, they really
critique the books. AAR also has many features
at its site including a bi-monthly opinion column called At The
Back Fence, a Historical Cheat Sheet that features articles
on aspects of history that are commonly found in romance novels
and a Special Titles Listing where readers who are
fond of books featuring specific settings or characters can find
a list of books. There are also interviews of writers and
articles by authors on various aspects of the romance field.
AAR also has several bulletin boards that encourage immediate reader
response.
Under the Covers Book
Reviews
http://www.silcom.com/~manatee/utc.html
This
site reviews many types of books, not just romances. The reviews
are short and are mostly of the cheerleading variety - they seldom
have anything bad to say about a book, and this limits its usefulness,
but the reviewers for this site do sometimes get reviews out several
months ahead of the book's publication date. This site is
on temporary hiatus.
Mrs. Giggles
http://www.worldzone.net/arts/mrsgiggles/index.html
Jenny Lim aka
Mrs. Giggles lives in Singapore. Here in her own words are what
her reviews are all about: "do be aware that the reviews here
are blunt, unprofessional, undiplomatic, grammatically and politically
incorrect, and even offensive to some people's sensibilities. Enjoy".
The Romance Journal
http://www.theromancejournal.com
This is a site
that offers mostly positive reviews. Some reviewers
do go into depth on the books, but nothing like The Romance Reader
or All About Romance. There are bulletin boards, articles,
links to author sites and more.

Family series, this is the site to visit. It also has
a good list of author pseudonyms.

professional writers organization in the world. It has
information for authors and those who would like to be, as well

here.
Kentucky Romance Writers
Homepage
http://www.win.net/romance/
Kentucky
is home to several romance writers, including several who are best-sellers.
Elizabeth Bevarly is from Louisville and writes for Silhouette and
Avon publishers and Teresa Medeiros is from Hopkinsville, and writes
historical romances for Berkley. Liz Curtis Higgs is an up
and coming writer in the field of inspirational romance. All
the writers have personal pages that are linked from the home site.
Karen Robards is also a best selling romance novelist who lives
in Louisville, but she is not on this site and does not have a webpage.
Romantic Times Magazine
http://www.romanictimes.com
This is the
website for Romantic Times Magazine, the trade journal of
the genre. Romantic Times is inclined
to be gushy and their reviews are all of the cheerleading variety
- they don't say anything bad about anyone. Reviews are sometimes
late in making it to the website, and that, as well as its always
positive reviews make it not very useful as a review source.
They do have a good writer's section, however and some useful tips
for new writers.
Harlequin Books
http://eharlequin.com/harl/globals/about/00mrkt11.htm
Harlequin
publishes most of the series romance novels. Most
people refer to all of them as "Harlequins". This is
their site and it is full of contests, recipes, travel tips and
a little bit of everything else.
