Audiovisual Curriculum Materials A large number of audiovisual items are available in the ERC for use with K-12th-grade classes. They include multimedia kits, toys, slides, games, cassettes, records, videos, etc. All audiovisual materials are available for circulation and are accessed through TOPCAT 2000. Call numbers begin with an X to designate nonbook items. Audiovisual items are located in the kit room in the Ed Center, or in the appropriate subject alcove. Curriculum Guides Curriculum guides are resources designed for the improvement and standardization of instruction. The ERC has some print curriculum guides, and since 1992 has purchased the KRAUS Curriculum Development Library on microfiche, which provides expanded access to curriculum guides from across the United States. A microfiche reader-printer is available for use with this material. Educational Methodology Books This collection of approximately 12,000 college and professional level books includes activity and "how to" materials on teaching subjects such as bulletin boards, classroom management, and teaching methodology in all major subject areas and levels. All these materials are accessed via TOPCAT 2000 and are shelved in the center area of the ERC. The call numbers are preceded by "Ed Center" in the catalog and on the spines of the books. These materials circulate for 28 days. Educational Software The ERC has a collection of software which runs on an Apple IIe; these are housed in the ERC. One computer workstation accesses the Jostens software which is located in the computer lab on the second floor of Tate Page Hall. Juvenile Collection This collection of approximately 40,000 books includes fiction and nonfiction for children and young adults. Newbery and Caldecott winners are included. They are accessed through the library's catalogs and include "Juv" in the call number. Juvenile books circulate for the same loan period as regular library books. K-12th Grade Textbooks and Supporting Materials Approximately 10,000 elementary and secondary textbooks, along with their supporting materials, are available. They are intended to provide examples of instructional resources from commercial publishers for teaching courses in the public school curriculum from grades K-12. Since 1994, the ERC has been a depository for curriculum materials under review for adoption by the state of Kentucky. All textbooks are cataloged and are accessed through
TOPCAT 2000. Call numbers on
the catalog and spines are preceded by "Ed Center" and a general subject
designation. Textbooks are shelved in subject area alcoves in the ERC
and circulate for 28 days. KERA Information Center The ERC has a collection of cataloged and uncataloged materials relating to the Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA). Major publications about KERA, reports of the Prichard Committee for Educational Excellence, examples of the first KIRIS assessment materials, student-created thematic units, and other materials are available. Reference Materials A small reference collection pertaining to children's and young adult literature and to teaching is located in the Ed Center. Terminals connected to the Library's network provide access to a number of indexes and abstract services. Check TOPCAT 2000 to see if WKU holds the journals and other materials you find on the databases. Educational
