About Acquisitions/Collection Services WKU Libraries has a centralized Unit for the acquisition of all monograph and audiovisual materials. The acquisitions involve pre-order searching, placement and receipt of orders and all activities involved with the payment, claiming and processing of materials received as a result of the order process. Guidelines for the ordering of new titles are available for review and orders may be placed through Faculty Library Representatives or by contacting a library public service faculty member. Title may also be ordered by completing a WKU Library Materials Request Form which will be forwarded to a faculty representative or librarian. Materials are ordered using the Voyager acquisition subsystem with a majority of orders placed electronically. Collection Services involves the coordination of the Libraries' collection development program. The Collection Development program is coordinated by Jack Montgomery, Collection Services Coordinator who heads this unit.
In recognition of the ongoing need to protect books purchased by the library and to make then attractive to patrons by leaving the dust jackets attached, the Department of Library Technical and Public Services have collaborated on and purchased a book cover system called COLIBRI. This system uses special transparent covers that are fitted and then secured in place with heat and resemble traditional book covers. The Acquisitions staff currently applies the covers to selected books as a part of the regular processing. If this process appears to promote increased circulation of the titles that are covered, the program will be expanded to include paperbacks and to provide support for damaged titles.
Gift Policy The WKU Libraries encourages gifts of materials useful to studies and research by students and faculty. Gifts received by the Acquisitions/Collection Services Unit are reviewed by public service library faculty. They may be accepted for the library collections or returned to the donor or surplused. Gift plates with the name of the donor are placed in the gifts added to the library collections. A letter of acknowledgment is sent to the donor. As an interested party in the transaction, the library cannot legally appraise or assign a value to a donation for future tax purposes. The donor may supply documentation as to the value of the materials donated and assign any value to their donation they feel to be correct. Please see the WKU Libraries Gift Policy and Procedures for more detailed information. Go to topOut of Print Requests Requests for out-of-print titles submitted to the Acquisitions Unit are searched against several of the online databases such as BIBLIOFIND and MX-BOOKFINDER. If found, and the price and condition are acceptable to the selector, the book is ordered. Those titles not located online are placed on a search-and-quote list with several well-known out-of-print dealers until a copy of the title is located and the price and condition accepted.
