What is LIFE?
LIFE is a program sponsored by the Center for Leadership Excellence and supported by the Provost’s Initiative for Excellence.
It is intended to meet the need of faculty who seek to develop their leadership skills.
What LIFE is not…
It is not a program that guarantees participants a future administrative role.
Who can participate in LIFE during the Spring of 2009?
The Fall 2009 LIFE program is aimed specifically at WKU Minority Faculty. During the Spring 2009 semester, the inaugural LIFE cohort consisted of WKU Women Faculty. In the future, we intend to offer the opportunity for other learning communities within the faculty ranks.
How are participants identified?
Members of the learning community are asked to apply and will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, with additional selection criteria based upon demographics of the faculty community in terms of minority status, college, and department affiliation. All faculty ranks are eligible.
How many participants will be accepted?
No fewer than 20 and no more than 25 can be accommodated in this session.
What is the cost of participation?
There is no cost to the individual. A generous grant from the Provost’s Initiative for Excellence fund has provided most of the support required.
Cost-sharing in the amount of $75 per individual is requested from the College or Division in which the applicants have faculty status. This is important to reflect the commitment of these units to the development of their faculty for leadership roles. No College or Division is expected to have expense greater than $375 (five participants). Any applicant for participation who is not able to secure cost-sharing from their College or Division should email Dr. Stacy Wilson.
What are the seminars?
There are four seminars planned. Each is approximately two hours in length. The dates of the seminars are September 15, October 20, November 10, and December 16. The first is a panel discussion featuring minority leaders, primarily from academia, introducing topics of concern to minority leaders and sharing their experiences in their individual leadership journeys.
The second is a book discussion. An excellent current book has been selected which concerns the challenges of leadership and is written by and for minorities.
The third experience will be completion of the Ropes course located at the WKU Agricultural Complex and taught by the WKU Department of Recreation.
The culminating experience will be an address from a Leadership Scholar and a celebration of our completion of the series.
Do I have to attend all of the seminars?
Participants are asked to commit to completion of the entire series of four seminars however each seminar is a stand-alone educational opportunity that does not depend on the content of the other seminars. For this reason it is possible that a participant might miss only one.
