ALCOHOL/SUBSTANCE ABUSE POLICY
“LEAD 475/GERMAN 100” in Berlin, May 18 - June 5, 2010
Faculty: Dr. Laura G. McGee, Prof. John Baker
Rev. October 27, 2009
The purpose of this program is to guide participants as they apply basic principles of leadership already acquired in LEAD 200 to an international location. At the same time students receive a sound introduction to living and functioning in an international environment through cultural orientation and practical language skills gained in GERM 100. An active engagement with other members of the group and with members of the target culture is essential to the learning process. Participants are expected to behave in a manner that is conducive to the purpose of the program. They are also expected to obey the laws of Germany at all times.
Participants in this study abroad program are advised as follows:
Enrollment in a study abroad program obligates participants to observe the same rules that are also valid on the WKU campus.
The legal drinking age in Germany is 16 for wine and beer, 18 for spirits. It is not unusual to see Germans consume alcohol in social situations, for example in restaurants and pubs, where friends meet to talk.
Program participants are expected to make responsible choices with regard to their personal use of any kind of substances such as drugs and alcohol. Consumption of alcohol at a level that impairs normal functions is regarded as abuse, and will not be tolerated on this program.
If it is observed that a participant has abused alcohol or other substances to an extent that impairs his/her ability to participate actively in any aspect of the program, he/she will be given one verbal warning. If the participant offends again, the faculty leaders have the right to return him/her to the United States immediately at his/her own expense.
A general warning is issued to all: individuals who abuse substances increase their risk of becoming a target of crime, because their awareness of their surroundings and their ability to make wise decisions may be impaired.
I, _______________________ (printed name) ________________________ (signature), have read and understand the above alcohol/substances policy. Dated: _______________.
