What is an Assessment Center?
An Assessment Center is defined as an integrated system of simulations and exercises which are designed to generate behavior similar to that which is required for success.
An assessment center is a process, not a place. The WKU Leadership Assessment Center evaluates student’s leadership abilities.
Unlike many other performance appraisal tools that hold one person responsible for the final assessment, assessment centers use a group of observers who come to consensus about that participant’s behavior.
Assessment centers are commonly used by business, industry, and government for selection of individuals to hire or promote. They are becoming more prevalent as their reliability is proven, however, they are expensive to create and maintain.
We are proud to offer the opportunity for students in our program to participate. Students receive valuable feedback and have the chance to experience and become comfortable with the Assessment Center process
How do we assess leadership?
We assess a student’s leadership competency through a series of activities and exercises carefully designed to allow the assessors opportunity to observe and record specific behaviors. The student invests approximately one hour in the preceding week on written activities (Blackboard) and another three hours at the Assessment Center.
When are the Assessment Centers?
We run the Assessment Centers at the beginning of the Fall and Spring semesters. Students typically choose the date and time they wish to participate. In some cases, the Assessment Center is run during scheduled class time.
How much time will it require?
Participants can expect to spend one (1) hour on Blackboard completing two exercises and three (3) hours at their scheduled Assessment Center. Snacks and beverages are provided.
