Community

Kentucky is made up of many communities. Communities including statewide, regional, or local groups, but also communities made up of those who share the same occupations, recreations, and aesthetic values. We are all a part of folk communities, whether farming tobacco, decorating demolition derby cars, or singing in a church choir we are all participating in folk groups. What is important is that the group share some sort of tradition, community could be seen as common occupation, language, religion, family, gender, social status, age, or groups identified by ethnic or national origin.

If you are not completely familiar with the term folklore and folklife, click on What Is Folklife to see practical examples and explanations of folklore and folk communities in Kentucky.
