At Western Kentucky University Working together to enhance the Jewish experience at Western |
||||||||||||||||||||
What is JSO Welcome to the Jewish Student Organization at Western Kentucky University! We are the representative of Jewish students and the local Jewish community on the WKU campus. It is our goal to provide students an avenue for affiliation with the social, educational, and spiritual aspects of Judaism. We aim to reach out to both Jewish and non-Jewish students on the WKU campus. The organization is flexible, dynamic, and student-centered. We all have different beliefs and backgrounds - all views are valued. JSO is not affiliated with any particular branch of Judaism. Western Kentucky University is one of the top comprehensive universities in the Southeastern United States. We are located in Bowling Green, the 4th-largest city in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and one of the most rapidly-growing cities in the state. What We Do JSO can arrange home hospitality for students wishing to spend holidays with local Jewish families. JSO holds a number of its own holiday-related events including Passover seders, Shabbat dinners and Chanukah and Sukkot parties, as well as co-sponsoring events with Congregation Am Shalom, the local Reform congregation. SOCIAL, EDUCATIONAL, AND SERVICE Camaraderie and recreational activities are an important part of JSO's programming. We get together for dinners, coffee, movies, parties, picnics...whatever it is that college students do. JSO is also a source for enrichment and exploration of the Jewish heritage. Throughout the year, JSO provides a link to a number of educational programs, including events at Congregation Am Shalom. JSO encourages students to accept the challenge of Tikkun Olam (making a better world). As Rabbi Hillel said, "If I am for myself alone what am I?" All are Welcome! Our events are open to everyone. In addition to students, we welcome Jewish and non-Jewish faculty, staff and community members. If you have any questions or require assistance, please feel free to contact the faculty advisors or any of the student officers who make up our leadership team. Am Shalom follows the practices of Reform Judaism, although they welcome Jewish people of any tradition. Am Shalom holds services twice a month on Friday evenings. The congregation is currently meeting at the Spirit of Hope Lutheran Church, 904 State Street, downtown on the Square just a few blocks from WKU. For more information about Am Shalom, call the faculty advisor, Bryan Carson, at 745-5007 or bryan.carson@wku.edu. Near-by Cities with Synagogues In addition to the synagogue in Bowling Green, there is a Reform congregation in Owensboro, and several synagogues of all traditions in Nashville and Louisville. All of these congregations welcome students to their religious services and other events. Click here for a complete listing of Jewish organizations in Kentucky and Tennessee. For rides to services, please call Am Shalom at (270) 745-0442, or contact JSO Faculty Advisor Bryan Carson at 745-5007 or bryan.carson@wku.edu.
