Federal Tax

ATTENTION F-1 and  J-1 STUDENTS and SCHOLARS and H-1B EMPLOYEES

If you earned any income from employment, an assistantship or interest on a U.S. savings account in the 2011 calendar year (January-December 2011), you are REQUIRED to file a U.S. Income Tax Return with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS). You must also file a separate form with the Kentucky Revenue Cabinet. These tax filings must be postmarked NO LATER THAN April 17, 2012. And the good news-you may get money back from both of these agencies if any money was withheld from your paychecks to cover taxes.

Each year, ISSS purchases access to an on-line Non-resident Alien tax service, GLACIER Tax Prep, and is offering this service free to WKU international students, faculty, and staff. Please read the instructions below to access GLACIER Tax Prep for filing your federal taxes.

KENTUCKY STATE ANNUAL INCOME TAX INFORMATION

(for students who received W-2 forms showing work done in 2011)

In addition to filing taxes with the federal government (IRS) for income earned from employment, an assistantship or bank interest, you need to file taxes for the state of Kentucky. These tax filings must be postmarked NO LATER THAN April 17, 2012.

Here are your options for successful filing:

Option 1: Our office recommends that you visit the Kentucky Revenue Taxpayer Service Center here in Bowling Green. Representatives there will provide you with the appropriate Kentucky Income Tax forms and help you fill them out. This is a free service. You MUST MAKE AN APPOINTMENT by PHONE as they DO NOT take walk-ins. You MUST bring a copy of your federal income tax return and your immigration documents with you when you go.

  • Click on “Individual” from the menu on the left of the screen. Select “Individual Income Tax” on the next page
  • Scroll down and choose the “Current Year – Individual Income Tax Forms” link
  • Depending on when you arrived in the U.S., you will choose one of two forms to fill out:

A. If Fall ’09 was your first semester, you should fill out the 740-NP and 740-NP Instructions. You may print out the 2 page 740-NP form from the web site as well as the 13 pages of instructions.

B. If you arrived in the U.S. prior to Fall ’09, you should fill out the 740EZ or the 740 (this is based on whether you are filing as single or married).

Please note: If you are eligible to receive a refund after filing your Kentucky tax form, it will take approximately 2-3 weeks for you to receive a refund check if you file electronically. If you want to know exactly when your refund will arrive, you can call the Automated Refund and Tax Information System at (502) 564-1600. You must have your Social Security Number and the amount of the refund.
